How does our Reading Recovery Program make a difference?
At St Robert's, students in Year One who are experiencing difficulties in learning to read and write are selected for our Reading Recovery Program. The program is facilitated by a trained Reading Recovery teacher and takes 20 weeks to complete for each child. A child who is participating in the program is withdrawn from the classroom for a 30 minute session 5 days a week to work one to one with the RR teacher. The Reading Recovery program aims to help children to become more independent readers and writers who are better able to join in the class literacy activities and become successful readers and writers.
Reading Recovery is a short term intervention program.
It is supplementary to the classroom reading and writing program.
It involves one teacher and one child working together daily for 30 minute sessions.
It engages children in reading books and writing stories.
It fosters success and independence in reading and writing.
For Reading Recovery to be successful for selected students, parents need to be regularly and actively involved in nurturing their child's love of reading and assisting the child to complete 'at home' tasks.
